În timpul testului Martindale, un tampon de pânză se rotește în timp ce aplică tensiune pe suprafața articolului mobilier până în momentul în care învelișul textil al mobilei se rupe. În acel moment aparatul ce este folosit la testare se oprește și indică numărul de rotații efectuat. Acest număr reprezintă unitățile de măsură Martindale. De exemplu, o tapițerie convențională rezistă între 20 000 și 45 000 unități Martindale (rotații ale acelui aparat de testare). Toate materialele care au o valoare mai ridicată sunt caracterizate prin rezistență mărită.
